HONORABLE MENTION
Special tribute to the following persons for their outstanding contribution to paddling in Belize, or to extraordinary paddling feats!
Celso CawichCelso is a marine biologist working with the University of Belize's Environment Research Institute where he normally can be found conducting research on Belize's coral reefs. In 2013 Celso Cawich paddled with the University of Belize Environmental Club. On Day 3 Celso paddled about 30 miles on his own from Flower's Bank to Burrel Boom. In response to bigging him up on Facebook Celso wrote: "Thanks very much, feels really good to be acknowledge. This was my first year, but hopefully not my last. La Ruta Maya, one of the best experience and challenge ever!!!" We hear you Celso! |
Chris & Mollie GuydisChris and Mollie Guydis live in Burrel Boom with their four daughters. But if you were to visit their house on any given day you would think they run a paddling camp since many other children (and adults!) are there to learn about paddling! Mollie is sure to make sure everyone has a meal and Chris educates them on paddling. Chris is following in Bob's footsteps and is sharing the "tricks of the trade" so to speak with eager paddlers. Every weekend Chris leads "paddling camp" with anyone interested in practicing. If you are looking for a good canoe, check out Guydis Canoes, built by Chris and his entourage!

Rick SalazarRicardo Salazar is a computer tech that lives in Boom just around the corner from Chris. He is the Manager for the Oceana Wavemaker's team which is comprised of Chris Guydis and usually some top international paddlers.
Rick has taken on the monumental task of reorganizing the Belize Canoe Association in the past year. His steadfast dedication in achieving this task has landed him the post of President for 2013! Thank you Rick for organizing the paddlers in Belize! |
Bob VincentProfessional paddler from Canada Bob Vincent has been coming to Belize for almost a decade paddling with Chris Guydis and bringing other paddlers to Belize to particpate in La Ruta Maya. Each time he comes to Belize he has always been eager to share his knowledge with Belizean paddlers. Thanks 'Coach Bob' for helping grow the sport in Belize!
